What is Genetic counselling?

A genetic counsellor is a healthcare professional appropriately trained to provide (or supervise) genetic counselling, helping individuals and families understand genetic conditions and genetic testing in a non-directive way — i.e., explaining the facts clearly, outlining options, and supporting patients to make their own decisions. Genetic counselling is considered an integral part of genetic testing, and includes pre-test counselling (purpose of the test, inheritance, risk, limitations, implications for relatives, consent, confidentiality) and post-test counselling (emotional impact, follow-up, written summary, implications for the individual and family, and how to inform relatives).

Sarah can expertly talk through the risks and benefits to genetic testing. Her extensive knowledge and compassionate approach give patients the time and understanding they need to test for conditions.

Examples of conditions:
Sarah can counsel about include Huntington’s, motor neurone disease (MND), cancer and many more.
